There aren’t many launches in the world of at-home skincare devices that make me think, "this is genius”, but this one absolutely does, and for several reasons.

When I thought about how CurrentBody could possibly make its Series 2 LED mask any better, I genuinely didn’t see this coming. Because when I think about it: what would take an already brilliant LED mask to the next level? Being able to customise and personalise your LED treatment to your own skin.

Meet the CurrentBody Series 3 LED Mask, the world’s first fully personalised, app-connected LED mask.

It keeps everything you know and love about the Series 2, but completely changes how you use LED at home. Instead of every area of your face receiving exactly the same treatment, you can now personalise your mask and choose which wavelengths and LED colours to target different areas of your skin. Essentially, you can build your treatment LED by LED, depending on your individual skin concerns.

This is a very different approach to at-home LED, and I’m going to explain exactly how it works, what’s changed from Series 2, the different wavelengths, what is MyDose™, my personalised LED programmes and, most importantly, whether I think Series 3 is worth the investment.

Why is Personalisation so Important in an LED Mask?

You’ve heard me say this many times before, but no two skins are the same. And if you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know that when I’m treating someone’s skin, it’s not just about what concerns we treat, but the order we treat them in and making sure that while targeting one concern, we don’t potentially exacerbate another. The same applies to LED.

LED can deliver fantastic results, but your skin doesn’t necessarily need the same light, wavelengths, or treatment across every area of your face. For example, you might target breakouts around the chin while focusing on collagen support and signs of aging elsewhere.

Until now, at-home LED masks have largely taken a one-treatment-fits-the-whole-face approach.

Being able to customise and personalise your LED treatment according to what different areas of your skin actually need changes that, and for me, that’s what makes personalised LED such a game changer.

 

How can you be sure your LED mask is delivering the right wavelength and power?

This is one of the most important questions I think we should be asking when investing in any at-home LED device.

An LED mask can list all the right wavelengths and specifications, but what matters is whether the mask on your face is delivering those wavelengths accurately, at the right power and, importantly, at the right dose for your skin. And this is where MyDose™ and Veritace® come in.

 

What is MyDose™?

MyDose™ is unique to the CurrentBody Series 3 and sits behind the personalisation of your treatment. It allows you to choose your wavelengths, decide where on your face you want them to target and then calculates the appropriate light dose for your personalised treatment. And dose really matters with LED.

Too little light energy may not be enough to achieve the desired effect, but more isn't necessarily better either. We want the skin to receive the appropriate amount of light energy for the treatment, which is why I think MyDose™ is such an important part of Series 3. You're not simply choosing different wavelengths and hoping you've got the combination right, MyDose™ works behind the scenes to calculate the dose for your personalised routine.. 

What is Veritace®?

Then we have Veritace®, CurrentBody's end-to-end production and testing system. This ensures the mask itself delivers what it claims.

They test every LED bulb in every mask for wavelength accuracy and power output, rather than testing only a sample from a production batch. And this is a huge green flag for me.

Because with LED, it isn't enough to simply have the right colour of light. The wavelength, power, and overall dose all matter if we want to deliver an effective LED treatment.

I see and test a lot of at-home skincare devices, and I don't currently know of another LED mask brand that tests every individual LED in every individual mask with this level of accuracy and precision.

What wavelengths will you find in Series 3?

The CurrentBody Series 3 has six different wavelengths, allowing you to target a much wider range of skin conditions than we’ve previously been able to with one at-home LED mask.

What makes this even more interesting is that these wavelengths aren’t restricted to certain LEDs or areas of the mask; all six wavelengths are available from every LED bulb across the mask.

This is what makes the level of personalisation possible. You’re not limited by where CurrentBody has positioned a particular wavelength; instead, you can choose which wavelength you want, where you want it, and what skin concern you want to target in that area.

And remember, wavelength matters. Different wavelengths of light interact with the skin at different depths and have different biological effects, so having six wavelengths across the entire mask gives us a completely different way to approach at-home LED treatment.

Blue Light - 415nm

This wavelength helps treat blemish-prone and acne-prone skin. Blue light acts more superficially within the skin and can target C. acnes, the bacteria involved in inflammatory acne, while also helping to calm inflammation and improve the appearance of blemishes.

Green Light - 532nm

Green light is ideal for mild hyperpigmentation; it can gradually help reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation over time while brightening the complexion. Green light helps calm the skin and reduce inflammation, making green light great for superficial redness and skin that flushes easily - so perfect for redness-prone skin. Note green light is best for mild, superficial hyperpigmentation and not persistent melasma patches.

Yellow Light - 590nm

Yellow light is best for inhibiting melanin synthesis, which slows melanin production and is believed to reduce tyrosinase activity, meaning less pigment formation. This makes yellow light interesting for hyperpigmentation, as it isn’t just targeting existing pigment; it’s also helping prevent new pigment from forming. It can help target redness, uneven skin tone, and overall radiance. Yellow light can help calm the appearance of redness, calm inflammation and support a brighter, more even-looking complexion whilst gradually fading dark patches and improving skin texture.

The best way to think of the next three wavelengths is: 

  • 633nm red = surface-visible rejuvenation and collagen support

  • 830nm NIR = deeper cellular repair, recovery and firmness

  • 1072nm deep NIR = deeper structural ageing and more established loss of firmness

Think collagen, fine lines and skin rejuvenation.

This is one of the wavelengths I talk about the most. Red light works closer to the surface than the near-infrared wavelengths and is particularly interesting for supporting fibroblast activity, collagen and elastin production, and the skin’s natural repair processes and supports cellular activity (ATP).

Over time, this can help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, texture, firmness and overall skin quality.

Near-Infrared (NIR) - 830nm

Think repair, regeneration, and firmness.

830nm near-infrared penetrates deeper than visible red light and is particularly interesting for supporting cellular energy, tissue repair and recovery, while also helping to calm inflammation.

This is one reason you often see 633nm red and 830nm near-infrared used together. Red light gives us that excellent rejuvenating and collagen-supporting action, while 830nm works deeper to support repair, regeneration, and firmer-looking skin, especially around the jawline and areas of loss of firmness.

Deep Near-Infrared (DNI) - 1072nm

This is where it gets particularly interesting.  At 1072nm, it’s a longer wavelength designed to penetrate deeper than visible wavelengths. CurrentBody uses it specifically to target more pronounced signs of ageing and support collagen production deeper within the skin.

For me, this makes 1072nm particularly interesting when we're thinking about structural signs of skin ageing loss of firmness, elasticity, and more established lines and wrinkles.

Another reason I find this wavelength interesting is men's skin. Male skin is typically thicker than female skin, largely due to androgen influence, so the ability to work with longer, deeper-penetrating wavelengths is particularly worth considering when choosing an LED mask.

And 1072nm still isn't a wavelength you'll find in every at-home LED device, which is one reason I was so interested when CurrentBody first introduced it in Series 2.

 

How easy is it to use the Series 3 LED Mask?

Considering how much technology and personalisation is built into Series 3, it’s actually incredibly easy to use. You really have three options, depending on how involved you want to be.

  1. If you love the science and know exactly what you want to target, you can build your own personalised LED programme, choosing your wavelengths and where you want them to work.

  2. If you don’t want to do that, you can simply choose one of the four preset programmes, where CurrentBody has already combined the wavelengths for specific skin concerns:

Can LED Masks Support Collagen Production?

Yes. Red, Near-Infrared and Deep Near-Infrared light can support collagen production, but they work very differently from skincare ingredients such as retinoids or peptides.

This is where we get into the science of photobiomodulation how specific wavelengths of light interact with our cells and influence cellular activity.

Red and near-infrared light are thought to interact with photoacceptors within our cells, with cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV) in the mitochondria among the most widely discussed. Think of mitochondria as the energy-producing centers of our cells.

When cells absorb these wavelengths of light, a cascade of biological responses can occur, including:

  • Increased ATP production - ATP is essentially the energy our cells use to carry out their functions think of it as the battery in your phone and the fuel for your car to run.

  • Changes in cellular signalling - influencing processes involved in repair, regeneration and inflammation.

  • Modulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) - small, controlled changes in ROS can actually act as important cellular signals. Excessive oxidative stress is what we don't want.

  • Increased fibroblast activity - fibroblasts are incredibly important because they produce components of our extracellular matrix, including Type I and Type III collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

  • Increased collagen synthesis - helping support the structure, firmness and elasticity of the skin.

  • Support for tissue repair and wound healing - another reason red and near-infrared light are used beyond purely cosmetic skin rejuvenation.

So LED isn't physically putting collagen into your skin. It's giving your cells a light-based signal that can encourage the biological processes involved in producing collagen.

That's why wavelength and dose matter so much. We need the right wavelengths to reach the intended cellular targets and enough light energy to stimulate a response but as we've already discussed with MyDose™, more light doesn't automatically mean better results.

What’s the difference between CurrentBody Series 2 and Series 3?

Series 2 was already one of the most advanced LED masks I had used, so Series 3 isn't simply about making the mask more powerful. For me, the biggest difference is personalisation.

Series 3 has 750 LEDs across 125 chipsets, and each chipset can deliver six different wavelengths. This matters because the wavelengths aren't confined to specific areas of the mask all six are available across the entire face, letting you target different concerns in different areas.

Series 2 used three wavelengths: 633nm red, 830nm near-infrared and 1072nm deep near-infrared. Series 3 adds another three: 415nm blue, 532nm green and 590nm yellow.

Series 2 has 236 LEDs, and Series 3 has 750 bulbs.

Another significant change is 830nm near-infrared coverage. In Series 2, 830nm NIR was concentrated around specific areas, whereas Series 3 can now be used across the entire face.

But here's the important bit: Series 3 isn't more powerful simply for the sake of being more powerful.

With the new MyDose™ technology and app connectivity, you can choose different wavelengths for different areas of your face, build your own treatment protocols, or as I mentioned earlier, you can keep things incredibly simple and use one of the preset programs or one of my Skin Expert programs.

And every LED is backed by CurrentBody's Veritace® testing, checking wavelength accuracy and power output.

So, is Series 3 worth paying more for?

For me, the biggest reason to invest in Series 3 isn't simply that you're getting more LEDs or more wavelengths  it's the level of personalisation those additions make possible and the ability to tailor your LED treatment much more precisely to what your individual skin needs.

Series 2 is still an excellent LED mask, but Series 3 takes things much further. You can target multiple skin concerns, use different wavelengths on different areas of the face and personalise your treatment rather than treating the entire face in exactly the same way.

And this comes back to something I say all the time: no two skins are the same. Even on one face, different areas of the skin can have very different needs.

So, do I think everyone who already owns Series 2 needs to immediately upgrade? No. Series 2 hasn't suddenly become any less effective.
