Struggling with Clogged Pores? These Are the Best BHA Pore Cleansing Cleansers

A close up of a woman cleansing her face with her eyes closed

If you’re dealing with clogged pores, blackheads, excess oil or regular breakouts, choosing the right cleanser can make a real difference to your skin. BHA (beta hydroxy acid) cleansers are particularly useful for congested and blemish-prone skin because they can help loosen excess sebum and dead skin cells that build up inside pores, while cleansing away everyday dirt and impurities. But not all BHA cleansers are created equal, and stronger doesn’t always mean better, especially if your skin is sensitive or easily dehydrated. I’ve tested and selected some of my favourite BHA and pore-cleansing cleansers across different price points, skin types and levels of exfoliation, from gentle everyday options to more targeted formulas for oily, breakout-prone skin.

The Ingredients to Look For

Salicylic Acid (BHA)

Salicylic acid is the classic BHA and one of my favourite ingredients for skin experiencing clogged pores, blackheads, excess oil and regular breakouts.

It's oil-soluble, so it can work within the oil-rich environment of the pores, helping loosen the build-up of dead skin cells and sebum that contributes to congestion.

In a cleanser, the contact time is much shorter than with a leave-on treatment, but it can still be a useful way to introduce salicylic acid into your routine.

Betaine Salicylate

Betaine salicylate is a compound formed from betaine and salicylic acid, often used as an alternative to salicylic acid in exfoliating formulations.

It offers exfoliating benefits and is frequently positioned as a gentler option, although how well it's tolerated depends on the concentration, pH and overall formulation.

It can be worth considering if you're looking for an alternative to traditional salicylic acid products, but don't assume it will automatically be gentler simply because it contains betaine.

Willow Bark Extract

You may also come across willow bark extract, often listed as Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, which is frequently marketed as a natural source of BHA.

However, willow bark extract isn't the same as salicylic acid, and it doesn't necessarily deliver the same exfoliating or pore-clearing benefits. It's a lovely supporting ingredient I wouldn't choose a product containing willow bark alone if my main concern was stubborn blackheads or clogged pores.

My advice: Don't just look for the word BHA on the packaging. Look at which ingredient is actually doing the exfoliating, and remember that the overall formulation matters just as much as the individual ingredient.

My Expert Tips for Using BHA Cleansers

After more than 30 years working with skin, one thing I always remind people is that just because a product is designed for daily use doesn't mean your skin needs it every day!

Don't rely on an exfoliating cleanser to remove your makeup. I much prefer using these as a morning cleanse or as the second step in your evening double cleanse. Remove your makeup and SPF first with a dedicated cleanser, then use your BHA cleanser on your skin so it can do what you've chosen it for.

Think about what else you're using in your skincare routine. If you're already using a leave-on BHA serum, exfoliating toner, retinoid or other active treatments, do you really need an exfoliating cleanser too? You may find a gentle, non-exfoliating cleanser is a much better choice rather than adding another exfoliating step.

You don't need to use a BHA cleanser every day. Start a couple of times a week and see how your skin responds. More exfoliation doesn't necessarily mean better results, and overdoing it can compromise your skin barrier.

And most importantly, listen to your skin! If you're experiencing tightness, dryness, stinging, redness or increased sensitivity, these could be signs that you're overdoing it. Your skin shouldn't feel stripped or uncomfortable after cleansing.

Remember, the aim isn't to exfoliate as much as possible. It's to find the right balance for your skin and your skincare routine.Be careful not to over-exfoliate; listen to your skin and reduce to once a day or twice a week if it becomes sensitive or dry.

Salicylic acid is the classic BHA. It’s oil-soluble, meaning it can travel into the pore lining to help dissolve excess sebum, congestion and dead skin cells. In a cleanser, it works quickly at the surface and within pores to support clarity, even with short contact time.

Betaine salicylate is a derivative of salicylic acid, formed by combining salicylic acid with betaine. It delivers similar exfoliating and pore-clearing benefits but in a gentler, slower-release way. It’s less irritating, more hydrating, and better tolerated by skin that might struggle with straight salicylic acid alone.

By pairing the two, this cleanser gets the best of both worlds: effective decongestion and oil control from salicylic acid, balanced by the softer, more skin-friendly exfoliation of betaine salicylate. That’s why it can be used daily without leaving skin tight or over-exfoliated, and why it suits combination or blemish-prone skin that still needs comfort and hydration.

The Inkey List Salicylic Acid Cleanser

If you're dealing with oily skin, regular breakouts and excess oil, this is definitely a cleanser worth considering. Formulated with 2% salicylic acid, an oil-soluble beta hydroxy acid (BHA), it helps exfoliate inside the pores, removing the build-up of dead skin cells and excess oil that can contribute to congestion and breakouts. There's also zinc to help manage excess oil and allantoin for its soothing properties.

One thing I would say is don't underestimate the power of this cleanser! Just because it's a wash-off formula doesn't mean you should overlook the 2% salicylic acid, particularly if you're already using exfoliating acids or retinoids in your routine. Too much exfoliation can compromise your skin barrier, so more isn't always better.

I would recommend starting once or twice a week rather than jumping straight into daily use, and only increasing the frequency if your skin needs it and tolerates it. Remember, you don't necessarily need to use an exfoliating cleanser every day to see benefits.

Eucerin DERMOPURE CLINICAL Correcting Cleanser

This is a great option for oily, combination and breakout-prone skin experiencing congestion alongside uneven texture and lingering post-blemish marks.

What I particularly like is the combination of 2% salicylic acid alongside glycolic acid (AHA) and gluconolactone (PHA). Rather than focusing solely on clogged pores, this formulation takes a multi-acid approach to exfoliation.

Salicylic acid is the star ingredient here, appearing third on the ingredient list. It's particularly useful for helping to loosen the build-up of dead skin cells and excess sebum within pores, making it a great ingredient to look for if you're experiencing blackheads, congestion and regular breakouts.

Glycolic acid works more on the skin's surface, helping to improve dullness and uneven texture, while gluconolactone provides additional exfoliation alongside its humectant properties.

I also like seeing glycerin relatively high up the ingredient list to help support hydration.

Another positive is that Eucerin has carried out clinical testing on the finished product. In a four-week product-use study involving 100 volunteers, 96% reported a reduction in blemishes and post-blemish marks. Encouraging results, although I'd always distinguish between participants reporting an improvement and independently measured changes in the skin.

However, there are a few things I'd consider. The formula also contains sodium laureth sulfate, alcohol denat. and fragrance. None of these automatically makes a cleanser unsuitable, but alongside multiple exfoliating acids, I'd be more cautious if your skin is particularly dry, reactive or your skin barrier is compromised.

Although Eucerin recommends using this cleanser twice daily, I wouldn't automatically follow that advice. With 2% salicylic acid alongside AHAs and PHAs, I'd start slowly, particularly if you're already using exfoliating toners, serums or retinoids. You may find that using it a few times a week is more than enough.

And remember, while this is an exfoliating cleanser, it's still a rinse-off product. The acids have a shorter contact time than a leave-on treatment, so don't assume you'll achieve the same results simply because it contains 2% salicylic acid.

Cetaphil Gentle Exfoliating SA Cleanser

I discovered this cleanser while judging the Get The Gloss Awards and was impressed. Cetaphil Gentle Exfoliating SA Cleanser is a brilliant option for skin that needs oil-balancing, pore-cleansing clarity without compromise. It uses salicylic acid to help keep pores clear and reduce congestion.

It’s buffered with hydrating ingredients like glycerin and betaine, which draw moisture into the skin. In contrast, panthenol helps calm and support the barrier, making this suitable even for skin prone to sensitivity. Gluconolactone and mandelic acid provide very gentle exfoliation to improve texture and brightness and niacinamide adds another layer of skin-supporting benefits, helping to regulate oil and strengthen the skin barrier over time.

The cleansing agents are mild and non-drying, making them suitable for daily use as a morning cleanse or a second evening cleanse rather than occasional treatment. A brilliant choice for combination, oily, or blemish-prone skin. If the skin is sensitive or dry, use this a couple of times a week and always listen to your skin. Cetaphil Gentle Exfoliating SA Cleanser is brilliant and powerfully effective.

Medik8 Surface Radiance Cleanse Resurfacing AHA/BHA Cleansing Gel

Medik8 takes a slightly different approach to exfoliation, combining AHAs and BHA to target both surface dullness and pore congestion.

The formula contains Mandelic Acid (which I love because it's oil- and water-soluble), it helps loosen dead skin cells to reduce dullness and uneven texture. Its larger molecular size means it generally penetrates the skin more slowly than glycolic acid. There's also salicylic acid, an oil-soluble BHA that's brilliant for clogged pores, blackheads and excess oil, alongside lactic acid, which provides additional surface exfoliation and has humectant properties.

Glycerin is relatively high up the ingredient list to help support hydration during cleansing.

For me, this combination makes it particularly interesting for normal, combination and oily skin experiencing clogged pores, blackheads, dullness or uneven texture. It could also be a good option for more mature skin experiencing these concerns, but age alone isn't a reason to choose an exfoliating cleanser!

I have a couple of things to consider. Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate is the second ingredient. It's an effective cleansing surfactant, but it may be too much for dry or sensitive skins.

And remember, this is a rinse-off exfoliating cleanser, so the acids have a much shorter contact time with your skin than a leave-on treatment. If you're already using retinoids or other exfoliating acids, consider how this fits into your routine rather than automatically using it every day.

Ole Henriksen Daily D-Clog Pore-Clearing Cleanser

I was so impressed with this cleanser, it's a creamy, milky gel that gently foams on contact with water, then rinses away cleanly without residue. It leaves skin feeling properly cleansed with a noticeable clarity to the complexion.

Salicylic acid and betaine salicylate (the same pore-clearing benefits as salicylic acid but in a gentler and more hydrating way) works to decongest pores and reduce excess oil, while Danish purple willow ferment supports the oil levels in the skin.

I also like that the formula is buffered with soothing ingredients, so it delivers results without that stripped. Used daily, it’s effective at keeping pores clear and skin smooth, making it a great option for combination or blemish-prone skin that doesn't experience any dryness.
