Best Milky Toners

Toners have come a long way and one of the favourite additions to the toner family is milky toners. The debate still goes on about if you should use a toner, and milky toners bring a different experience and are a skin saviour for normal, combination and dry skin types. Sensitive and dehydrated skin conditions will love the silky gentle approach which is unique to a milky toner.

What is a milky toner?
One of the quickest ways to instantly replenish moisture and hydration in the skin, often packed with barrier-identical ingredients to support and strengthen the skin's first line of defense. Milky toners have a serum-like texture, are light in consistency, and include supercharged skin-loving ingredients replacing lost moisture that could have been stripped from cleansing or environmental aggressions.

What is the best way to apply milky toner?

I recommend you apply with your hands as they are more serum like, however, if you like the feeling of a cotton pad sweeping over the face for freshness then you can do this too just be sure to damp the cotton pads as they will act like sponges and absorb the toner.

What is the difference between a toner and a milky toner?

The toner category has become blurred, leaving many people wondering if we should be using a toner and what are the added benefits to the skin. One thing for sure is the claim of being an integral part of cleansing the skin is no longer true, and thankfully we have gotten past the myth that toners could close open pores. Your toner is there to replenish lost moisture and hydration either from cleansing or environmental aggressions. Due to their consistency, they are more serum-like and less liquid than typical toners.

Why should I use a milky toner?

Due to their ability to flood the skin with hydration and moisture if you have dehydrated, thirsty, dry, and sensitive skin milky toners will be a savior for you. Delivering instant softness, suppleness, and hydration.

What is the difference between a milky toner and an essence?

This is where the lines become really blurred. My expert opinion is you do not need both, as milky toners are leaning more towards an essence and less toner. Save yourself some money and time and just use one or the other.

My favourite Milky Toners:

Byoma Hydrating Milky Toner

I love everything about this toner, from the gorgeous silky, fine milky texture to the way it instantly comforts, hydrates and softens the skin. It can be applied using damp cotton wool or your fingertips, although I highly recommend using your hands so you get the full benefit of the formula without wasting product.

What particularly impresses me is how BYOMA has combined hydrating, soothing and barrier-supporting ingredients in such a beautifully formulated product at an affordable price point.

Panthenol sits high up the ingredient list, which I love, alongside glycerin, polyglutamic acid, saccharide isomerate and sodium hyaluronate. These humectants work in different ways to attract and retain moisture, helping the skin feel instantly hydrated, soft and supple.

The soothing ingredients are another big green flag for me. Panthenol, centella asiatica and beta-glucan make a lovely combination, particularly for skin that's dehydrated, sensitive or feeling uncomfortable.

There's also meadowfoam seed oil to help soften and nourish the skin, alongside BYOMA's Barrier Lipid Complex, which includes Ceramide NP and sphingolipids, with hydrogenated lecithin providing additional lipid support. These ingredients help support the skin's natural barrier, reducing moisture loss and improving skin comfort.

I particularly recommend this for normal, dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin, especially when the skin is feeling tight or uncomfortable.

And at just £11.99 for 150ml, I think it offers exceptional value for money.

My verdict: A gorgeous, well-rounded milky toner that delivers immediate hydration, soothing comfort and barrier support. It's a great example of how you don't need to spend a fortune to get a thoughtfully formulated skincare product that feels beautiful on the skin.

Bubble Skincare Cosmic Silk Hydrating Milky Toner

This texture is gorgeous, a silky, milky consistency that absorbs beautifully into the skin, bringing immediate comfort and leaving a lovely veil of hydration and moisture. The skin feels soft, supple and beautifully conditioned.

While Bubble highlights four types of hyaluronic acid, for me, the real strength lies in the combination of humectants, emollients, fatty acids, ceramides and cholesterol. It's a much more rounded approach to hydration than simply relying on hyaluronic acid alone.

There's glycerin, a combination of hydrating sugars and four forms of hyaluronic acid to help attract and retain moisture, alongside a lovely combination of barrier-supporting lipids.

And they don't stop there: three ceramides (NP, AP and EOP), cholesterol, phytosphingosine and fatty acids, including linoleic and linolenic acid. These ingredients help support the skin's natural protective barrier and reduce moisture loss, which is particularly beneficial when skin is feeling dry, dehydrated or uncomfortable.

There's also allantoin to help soothe the skin, and the formula is fragrance-free, which is another big positive.

What makes this toner stand out for me is that immediate feeling of comfort. It doesn't just leave the skin feeling hydrated; it creates a delicate moisturising veil that makes the skin feel nourished and beautifully cushioned. And despite that additional moisture, I don't find the texture itself heavy.

I can see this being particularly lovely for normal, dry and dehydrated skin, especially when the skin feels tight or needs additional comfort. For oilier or combination skin, that lingering moisturising feel may come down to personal preference.

My verdict: A beautifully formulated milky toner that delivers hydration, moisture and barrier-supporting ingredients in one gorgeous step. I particularly love the silky texture and the immediate comfort it brings to the skin.

This is definitely one of the richer milky toners, so be mindful of what you're layering with it. You may not need an additional hydrating essence or serum.

If you're using a vitamin C serum, I'd apply an oil-based Vitamin C afterward rather than a water-based Vitamin C.

Paula’s Choice Calm Nourishing Milky Toner

If your skin is on the drier side and you're looking to step up the hydration and moisture in your routine, this is a lovely option.

What I particularly like about this toner is the texture. It's much closer to a lightweight essence or serum than a traditional watery toner, with a beautifully comforting, milky consistency that leaves the skin feeling soft, hydrated and nourished.

Compared with BYOMA Hydrating Milky Toner, I would describe this as a step up in richness. While BYOMA provides lightweight hydration and comfort, Paula's Choice has more of that essence-like feel, which I think drier skin will particularly appreciate.

The formulation focuses on replenishing moisture, soothing the skin and supporting the skin barrier. It also includes ingredients intended to help support a healthy skin microbiome, which plays an important role in maintaining the skin's protective function.

What I particularly like is that this isn't simply about adding hydration. It's about helping skin feel more comfortable, especially when it's experiencing dryness, tightness or sensitivity.

I can see this being a lovely addition for dry, dehydrated or sensitised skin, particularly when the skin is feeling stressed by environmental factors or changes in temperature.

My verdict: A beautifully comforting, essence-like milky toner that offers more than a traditional watery toner. I particularly recommend this for drier skin that needs additional moisture, soothing care and barrier support. If you love BYOMA but feel your skin needs something a little richer, this would be a lovely option to consider.

Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging Replenishing Toner

I always think of this as the big sister of Paula's Choice CALM Nourishing Milky Toner! They have a very similar milky, essence-like texture, but RESIST takes things a step further with additional moisture-replenishing ingredients.

If your skin is feeling particularly thirsty, dry or dehydrated, this is a lovely toner to introduce into your routine.

What I particularly like about the formulation is that it doesn't just focus on attracting water into the skin. It also includes ingredients that help replenish moisture and support the skin's natural protective barrier.

There's hyaluronic acid to help attract and retain water, alongside phospholipids and omega fatty acids to help soften, condition and support the skin's lipid barrier. I particularly like this combination because dry skin doesn't just need hydration; it also needs lipids to help maintain moisture and reduce water loss.

The texture is another big positive for me. It has that lovely milky, almost essence-like consistency that feels beautifully comforting on the skin, leaving it feeling instantly replenished, hydrated and soft.

Compared with CALM Nourishing Milky Toner, which I'd particularly recommend for dry, sensitive or sensitised skin, RESIST would be my choice for someone whose main concerns are persistent dryness, dehydration and a lack of moisture.

And don't let the Anti-Aging name put you off. You don't need to be a certain age to benefit from a well-formulated hydrating toner. It's about what your skin needs, not how old you are.

My verdict: A beautifully comforting, moisture-replenishing toner that combines humectants with skin-conditioning lipids. I particularly recommend this for dry, dehydrated skin that needs more than lightweight hydration. If you love the texture of CALM but want to focus on replenishing moisture, RESIST is definitely worth considering.

Dr Jart+ Ceramidin™ Skin Barrier Serum Toner

This is one of my absolute favourite milky toners! Everything about it is divine, from the beautifully comforting texture to the way it leaves my skin glowing with hydration and moisture.

What I particularly love is that it feels more like a combination of a toner and an essence. In fact, when I was using this daily, I didn't feel the need to use a separate essence, which says a lot about how beautifully hydrating and moisturising I found it.

The formulation is another big green flag for me. It's packed with ingredients that focus on hydration, moisture retention and supporting the skin barrier.

Ceramides are particularly important because they're naturally found within the skin's outermost layers, where they help maintain the protective barrier and reduce moisture loss. I love seeing these combined with Panthenol (vitamin B5), which helps hydrate and soothe the skin, alongside Glycerin to attract and retain moisture.

What makes this toner stand out for me is that it doesn't simply deliver a quick burst of hydration. It also leaves the skin feeling beautifully cushioned, nourished and comfortable, which is exactly what I look for when my skin needs additional moisture.

I would happily use this all year round. My skin feels instantly hydrated, replenished and wonderfully soft, with a gorgeous healthy-looking glow.

I particularly recommend this for normal, dry and dehydrated skin, especially if your skin feels tight, uncomfortable or in need of additional barrier support. If you have very oily skin or prefer a toner that disappears completely into the skin, you may find the richer texture more than you need.

My verdict: A beautifully formulated, intensely comforting milky toner that delivers hydration, moisture and barrier-supporting ingredients in one gorgeous step. I love the texture, the way it leaves my skin feeling and the fact that it can replace a separate essence in my routine. One of my absolute favourites and a product I would happily use throughout the year.

The Ordinary Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner

This is quite different from the other milky toners I've reviewed because, alongside hydration, it offers gentle exfoliation to help improve skin texture, smoothness and radiance.

What makes this formulation particularly interesting is that it takes a non-acid approach to exfoliation. Rather than relying on traditional exfoliating acids such as Glycolic or Lactic Acid, it uses a combination of 30% Saccharomyces Ferment and 3% Fermented N-acetylglucosamine (NAG).

N-acetylglucosamine is a naturally occurring component of the skin and plays a role in the production of hyaluronic acid. As a skincare ingredient, it's particularly interesting for its hydrating properties and ability to help improve the appearance of uneven skin texture and tone.

I particularly like that this formula combines these benefits with a lightweight, milky texture that leaves the skin feeling soft, smooth and hydrated. It offers something different from a traditional hydrating toner, making it a lovely option for someone experiencing dullness, uneven texture or skin that feels a little rough.

And because it doesn't rely on traditional exfoliating acids, it may be a gentler option for those who find stronger acid exfoliants too much for their skin. However, gentle doesn't mean irritation is impossible, and I'd still recommend introducing it gradually, particularly if you're already using retinoids or other exfoliating products.

Unlike AHAs, which can increase the skin's sensitivity to UV radiation, this isn't a traditional AHA-based exfoliant. However, daily SPF remains essential, regardless of which exfoliating ingredients you're using.

What I particularly appreciate is that it brings together hydration and gentle resurfacing in one step, so you're not necessarily having to introduce a separate exfoliating product into your routine.

My verdict: A beautifully formulated, lightweight milky toner that offers something a little different. I particularly like the combination of Saccharomyces Ferment and N-acetylglucosamine to help improve skin smoothness, texture, and hydration. A lovely option for skin experiencing dullness or uneven texture, especially if you prefer a gentler approach to exfoliation.

Anua Rice 70 Glow Milky Toner

I really like this toner! The texture is beautifully lightweight, absorbs effortlessly and leaves the skin feeling refreshed, balanced and hydrated without any heaviness.

What particularly impresses me is that Anua has combined hydration and barrier-supporting ingredients with those that can help improve the appearance of uneven skin tone and dullness. So rather than simply focusing on moisture, this toner takes a more rounded approach to achieving healthy-looking, radiant skin.

The star ingredient is 70% rice bran water, which helps soften and condition the skin. Rice-derived ingredients have long been used in skincare, and I particularly like how this formula combines them with more targeted ingredients.

There's niacinamide, arbutin and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), all interesting additions for supporting a brighter, more even-looking complexion. Niacinamide is particularly useful for helping support the skin barrier and improving uneven skin tone, while arbutin is known for its role in helping address the appearance of pigmentation. However, as the concentrations aren't disclosed, I would see these as additional benefits rather than expect this toner to replace a dedicated pigmentation serum.

The hydration side is equally impressive. Three forms of hyaluronic acid, alongside panthenol and betaine, help attract and retain moisture, leaving the skin feeling soft, smooth and comfortable.

And there's a lovely barrier-supporting combination of three ceramides (NP, AP and EOP), cholesterol and phytosphingosine. I particularly like seeing these ingredients together because the skin's protective barrier relies on a combination of lipids, not ceramides alone.

What makes this toner stand out for me is how much it offers in such a lightweight texture. It delivers hydration and comfort without that richer moisturising veil you get from some milky toners, making it a lovely option for normal, combination or dehydrated skin that prefers a lighter finish.

I can also see this appealing to someone experiencing dullness or uneven skin tone who wants to introduce some additional brightening ingredients into their routine without adding another dedicated treatment step.

My verdict: A beautifully lightweight, well-rounded milky toner that combines hydration, barrier-supporting lipids and ingredients that can help improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. I particularly love how effortlessly it absorbs and how fresh, smooth and hydrated the skin feels afterwards. A lovely option for anyone wanting hydration and radiance without a rich or heavy finish.
